Parent Visa – Subclass 103 (Permanent)

The Parent Visa Subclass 103 is a permanent visa that allows parents of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia permanently.

This visa provides full permanent residency benefits including Medicare access, work rights, and eligibility to apply for Australian citizenship (subject to criteria). However, due to very high demand and limited annual migration program places, the Subclass 103 visa has a significantly long processing time. Applicants must meet the Balance of Family Test and be sponsored by their child.

Other Family & Partner Visas

The Parent Visa (Subclass 103) is a permanent visa that allows parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live permanently in Australia.

Applicants must:
• Have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen.
• Meet the Balance of Family Test.
• Be sponsored by their child.
• Meet health and character requirements.

The Balance of Family Test requires that at least half of the applicant’s children live permanently in Australia, or more children live in Australia than in any other single country.

Subclass 103 has very long processing times due to limited annual visa places. Processing can take many years, often more than a decade, depending on application queue and government planning levels.

Subclass 103 has a lower visa application charge compared to contributory parent visas. However, applicants may be required to provide an Assurance of Support and meet additional costs such as health checks and police clearances.

If applying offshore, applicants must generally remain outside Australia until a decision is made. If applying onshore (where eligible), a bridging visa may be granted, allowing lawful stay during processing.

Once granted, Subclass 103 provides permanent residency, access to Medicare, work rights, study rights, and the ability to apply for Australian citizenship (if eligible).
